Every character will remember everything you say -- or don't say -- as you figure out how to approach my (your?) hyper-conservative Asian parents. And if all that seems confusing or awkward... well, that's the gist of coming out as queer, isn't it?

Tetrageddon Games
Nathalie Lawhead (Online)

Finalist: Nuovo Award

Tetrageddon Games ( http://tetrageddon.com ) is an online open source freeware arcade for both desktop and mobile devices. It is a playable Pop Art parody of our online life, and digital reality. The game was created entirely by one person, and is playable online at http://tetrageddon.com

Tetrageddon Games is free, and open source. Aside from playing, you are encouraged to creatively engage yourself. If you see something you like you can download the sourcefiles, modify, or built your own game based on any assets you chose.
Open source makes progress accessible to anybody that wants to contribute. I like to think that cooperation is key to evolution. A big part of me wishes that art, or entertainment, would be the same. I think if artists would be more open, and less protective of their work, art would be much more socially relevant. Realizing that people are no longer happy with being just the consumer, Tetrageddon aims to satisfy the need to play, create, adapt, copy & paste, and build on.

Tetrageddon Games is a satire of our digital life. I aim to do with games what Monty Python did with humor in terms of ridiculousness, and constant change of themes. It is the internet in the form of a game, as if your browser landed in the web's version of Ripley's Believe It or Not!. It is full of rabbit holes, and waves of bizarre creations that you play with. I encourage the player to interact with the project as a whole (holistically). It is not only separate individual pieces, but a narration of the dynamic times we are in.

This War of Mine
11 bit studios (Windows, Mac, and Linux)

Finalist: Excellence in Narrative and Seumas McNally Grand Prize

In This War Of Mine you do not play as an elite soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, medicine and constant danger from snipers and hostile scavengers. The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle.

The pace of This War of Mine is imposed by the day and night cycle. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout: crafting, trading and taking care of your survivors. At night, take one of your civilians on a mission to scavenge through a set of unique locations for items that will help you stay alive.

Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them for longer-term survival. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival. The sooner you realize that, the better.

Three Fourths Home
[bracket]games (Windows, Mac, and Linux)

Finalist: Excellence in Narrative

In her mid-20's, Kelly has moved back into her parents' house. Back to the flat expanse of Nebraska, that seemingly endless sea of rustling cornstalks peppered by rusty silos and rustier towns. A typically intense Midwestern storm is approaching while Kelly is out; she needs to get home.

In Three Fourths Home, players assume the role of Kelly while she is driving home during this thunderstorm. The focus of the game is its narrative, conveyed through an extended conversation Kelly has with her parents and younger brother. The player must navigate the conversation while driving through a stylized representation of rural Nebraska set against rumbling thunder and the music playing from the car's tape deck.

Three Fourths Home is a look into a specific moment of these characters' lives and their relationships with one another. The narrative touches on a variety of issues affecting Kelly and her family, including disability, adulthood, familial obligation, and nostalgia.
