IGF 2010 Main Competition Entrant

Heartbeat

Company: Capybara Games (Toronto, Ontario - Canada)

Game Website: http://www.hrtbt.com

Description:
Heartbeat is about the experience of growing sound. Players begin with an empty, ambient whisper that they can develop to form a pulsating wall of music while exploring an ever-evolving space.

Heartbeat offers players the opportunity to explore the creation of music in an innovative way through the use of the Nintendo Wii-Mote. By controlling a heart-shaped cursor, players can trigger sounds, activate objects and keep the beat alive and growing.

Heartbeat is divided up into phases; each phase is a different single-screen space populated with musical objects that have their own behaviors, unique sounds and interactions, with both the player and other objects. The goal of each phase is to help the sound grow by following the rhythm and solving the interaction. Players can do this through the exploration of space, behavior and object play. Objects evolve when a phase is complete and the sound they created is added to the overall music generated by the game. This evolution signals the start of a new phase, with new interactions to solve and new music to grow.
