Success Stories?

1999 - Vicarious Visions, now a major handheld / console developer, honored for Terminus.

2000 - Tread Marks, created by the late Seumas McNally, which the IGF's grand prize is now named after, wins 3 major awards.

2003 - Super X Studios' Wild Earth, a photographic game based around a worldwide safari, takes multiple prizes and subsequently becomes a motion simulator ride.

2004 - Innovative casual turn-based strategy game Oasis wins the web/downloadable grand prize, going on to launch on major online portals the following year.

2005 - Multi award-winner Alien Hominid receives publishing deals in the U.S. (via O3 Publishing) and Europe (via Zoo Digital), much critical acclaim, and even spawns a mobile version.





 

IGF Awards

Only games entered into the main IGF Competition and the IGF Modding Competition are eligible for awards -- the Student Showcase is a non-competitive event.

IGF Main Competition

The main IGF Competition, for which the entry deadline is September 6, 2005 at 11:59pm PDT, includes seven major awards:

  • Seumas McNally Grand Prize ($20,000)
  • Innovation In Visual Art ($2,500)
  • Innovation In Audio ($2,500)
  • Innovation In Game Design ($2,500)
  • Technical Excellence ($2,500)
  • Best Web Browser Game ($2,500)
  • Audience Award ($2,500)

There will be five specifically named finalists for each award, except the Best Web Browser Game award, which will have three finalists. All finalists will be invited to the IGF award ceremony at GDC 2006. The IGF Audience Award will be voted from the finalists in all other categories. Please note that Mod competition entries are not eligible for these prizes, and have a separate prize pool (see below).

Category Finalists receive:

  • One Giga Pass or Two Classic Passes to the 2006 GDC
  • Mention in Game Developer magazine
  • Mention on Gamasutra.com
  • Press release coverage
  • Profile in this year's Festival program
  • A one-year limited use license to use a version of the official Independent Games Festival name and IGF Finalist logo in promotional materials relating to their Game Entry

Competition Winners receive:

  • Cash prize
  • Award Plaque
  • A one-year limited use license to use a version of the official Independent Games Festival name and IGF Winner logo in promotional materials relating to their Game Entry

Seumas McNally Grand Prize Winner receives:

  • Cash prize
  • Award Plaque
  • Three Giga Passes to the 2007 Game Developers Conference
  • Mention in Game Developer magazine
  • Mention on Gamasutra.com
  • Press release coverage
  • A one-year limited use license to use a version of the official Independent Games Festival name and IGF Winner logo in promotional materials relating to their Game Entry.

IGF Student Showcase

The IGF's Student Showcase, for which the entry deadline is November 15 , 2005 at 11:59pm PDT, will highlight a total of ten games this year:

  • 8 outstanding Student Showcase finalists constructed using all original elements.
  • 2 outstanding Student Showcase finalists constructed using middleware of any kind (graphics engine, physics.)

Student Showcase finalists receive:

  • $500 allowance per team for travel expenses
  • One Giga Pass or Two Classic Passes to the 2006 GDC
  • Mention in Game Developer magazine
  • Mention on Gamasutra.com
  • A one-year limited use license to use a version of the official Independent Games Festival name and IGF Student Showcase finalist logo in promotional materials relating to their Game Entry.

IGF Mod Competition

The IGF's new mod competition, for which the entry deadline is November 1, 2005 at 11:59pm PDT, will award the most outstanding, independently developed modifications for four major game titles. The game titles are as follows:

  • IGF Best Mod - 'Half-Life 2' ($2,500)
  • IGF Best Mod - 'Unreal Tournament 2004' ($2,500)
  • IGF Best Mod - 'Neverwinter Nights' ($2,500)
  • IGF Best Mod - 'Doom 3' ($2,500)

Category Finalists receive:

  • One Giga Pass or Two Classic Passes to the 2006 GDC
  • Mention in Game Developer magazine
  • Mention on Gamasutra.com
  • Press release coverage
  • Profile in this year's Festival program
  • A one-year limited use license to use a version of the official Independent Games Festival name and IGF Finalist logo in promotional materials relating to their Game Entry
